What are Paradox Pokemon in Scarlet & Violet?

Paradox Pokemon are brand new Pokemon that bear a heavy resemblance to existing Pokemon. They are divided into two groups: ‘Ancient’ creatures for Pokemon Scarlet and ‘Future’ creatures for Pokemon Violet.

These mysterious Pokemon were first written about in the Scarlet Book and Violet Book, two in-game documents that feature records of an expedition to an “uncharted area” of Paldea from long ago.

The most important thing to point out is that these Pokemon are an entirely new group of Pokemon with their own Pokedex entry and number. They’re not considered variants, regional forms, or evolutions.

Where to find Paradox Pokemon in Scarlet & Violet

Most Paradox Pokemon can be found by searching around various sections of The Great Crater of Paldea (Area Zero) at the center of the map, but only after you’ve completed the main game and the credits have rolled.

Things work a little differently for Walking Wake and Iron Leaves. These two Pokemon were added to the game post-launch and could only be caught by defeating them in limited-time Tera Raid events. It’s currently unknown when they’ll return.

The good news is that, unlike Legendary Pokemon, you can catch Paradox Pokemon more than once. This means you don’t need to worry about accidentally defeating them when trying to catch them.

All of these Pokemon are considered to be very powerful, with many of them being on par with pseudo-Legendaries from previous games, so it’s always worth adding them to your collection.

New Paradox Pokemon coming in Scarlet & Violet DLC

It’s been revealed that two more Paradox Pokemon will make their debut in Scarlet & Violet’s upcoming DLC expansion The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, which is split into two parts: The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk.

The first new Paradox Pokemon is called Raging Bolt. This is an Electric/Dragon-type creature that appears to be an Ancient version of Raikou. It will appear during Part 2: The Indigo Disk for players who own Pokemon Scarlet and the DLC expansion.

The second one is called Iron Crown. This is a Psychic/Steel-type creature that appears to be a Future version of Cobalion. It will appear during Part 2: The Indigo Disk for players who own Pokemon Violet and the DLC expansion.

While Part 1: The Teal Mask is set to release on September 13, 2023, there’s no exact release date for Part 2: The Indigo Disk. All we know is that it’s slated to launch in winter 2023.

WHAT ARE PARADOX POKÉMON ?

Paradox Pokémon are Pokémon that were pulled from the past and future via a time machine, entering Paldea and hanging around in its cloudy Area Zero in the middle of the map. While a few of these Pokémon may look like creatures you know and love, they’re entirely new, and not just regional variants.

Paradox Pokémon differ in both Scarlet and Violet — the ancient-looking ones are found in Scarlet, and the futuristic ones in Violet. For instance, if you’ve got Scarlet, you’ll have to trade with a Violet player to get those game-specific Paradox Pokémon.

WHEN CAN I USE KORAIDON AND MIRAIDON IN BATTLE?

You’ll get one of these Paradox Pokémon at the start of the game, depending on whether you chose Scarlet or Violet. (As a reminder, it’s Koraidon for Scarlet and Miraidon for Violet.) You can’t exactly catch them in Area Zero — with one exception. But once you’ve gotten to Area Zero and close to the end of the story, you’ll battle a wild Koraidon/Miraidon — and your own Pokémon will regain its strength to battle it.

You can then use Koraidon or Miraidon like you would any other Pokémon, except that it doesn’t live in a Poké Ball or your boxes. You’ll need to change it from ride-on mode to battle mode by clicking it in your team lineup screen — once you’ve clicked it, you’ll be asked if you want it to transform into battle mode. It’ll be removed from your active team after you ride it again.

Once you hit credits on the game, you can go back to Area Zero and battle that same Pokémon again — it’s all the way at the very bottom of Area Zero. You can do this battle just once. It’s handy to have a second Koraidon or Miraidon if you don’t want to be constantly switching from ride-on to battle modes.

HOW DO I CATCH PARADOX POKÉMON IN SCARLET AND VIOLET?

With the exception of Koraidon and Miraidon, which are given to you at the start of the game, Paradox Pokémon can be found and caught in Paldea’s Area Zero — but only after completing the main storyline. All of these Pokémon can be found in Area Zero, all around the place and its various sub regions with levels in the 50s.

Unlike legendary Pokémon, you can catch multiples of these Pokémon, but know this: They are harder to catch than regular Pokémon. We recommend heading out with Ultra Balls, alongside a party featuring Pokémon who can paralyze or put the Paradox creatures to sleep. (Inflicting such status conditions on a wild Pokémon makes it easier to catch that Pokémon.) Found one you really like? Maybe it’s worth a Master Ball.

Each of these Pokémon have places they’re more frequently found within Area Zero, but two, Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant, are available only in a specific spot: a cave between the second and third research stations. Area Zero isn’t huge, so if you wander around enough you’ll absolutely come across each of these Pokémon.

Paradox Pokémon are special species found while exploring the Paldea region, and are relatives of existing Pokémon found through the unprecedented triumphs of time-machine experimentation. What kind of relative depends on which Gen IX game is being played – Pokémon Scarlet has ancient past relatives of familiar faces, while Violet visits the distant future.

The respective designs reflect the time period the species is from, with Scarlet’s ancient Paradox Pokémon having more primal and prehistoric features, while the others are more futuristic with engines and electricity. As the Paradox Pokémon were likely named by an AI, as explored through the Gen IX story, the names are very different to those that Pokémon usually have. The English names are always two words, from Great Tusk and Slither Wing to Iron Treads and Iron Moth.

While Paradox Pokémon have brought exciting new variations for beloved species, there are various better ways that they could have been introduced to the franchise.
