Based on Mattel’s most popular and iconic doll, the film stirred the public’s curiosity from the get-go, generating conversations about how its polarizing subject was going to be dealt with.

The Barbie movie marketing team went to great lengths to ensure the buzz was there to stay, revealing enough to generate intrigue through a few, well-placed hints while preserving the project’s enigmatic quality.

The Barbie movie is still largely shrouded in mystery, but the teaser clips give an idea of what to expect, offering glimpses of the visually-pleasing aesthetic of Barbieland in all its colorful glory.

The trailer features Barbie (Margot Robbie) navigating her everyday life in plastic, with an ever-loyal Ken (Ryan Gosling) by her side, lots of fabulous friends to hang out with, and random instances of existential dread.

Since the film’s tone and narrative development are not clearly laid out, its genre has been called into question as well. In particular, a choreographed dance number carried out by Barbie’s star-studded ensemble cast kindled speculations about the film being a musical comedy.

The Barbie Movie Is Not A Full Musical But Does Have Original Songs

Despite a couple of convincing clues, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is not a full-blown musical. The film does have original songs, but still distances itself from the likes of La La Land and The Greatest Showman in terms of how much singing and dancing will guide the unfolding of the story.

The Barbie movie does have musical skits like the “I’m Just Ken” tune, but there is currently no indication of whether songs sung by the characters will be heavily incorporated into the narrative.

However, music is still set to play an important role in the film. Barbie boasts an impressive soundtrack that already looks like the perfect backdrop for the story and can still hold some surprises.

Additionally, the film does give off major musical vibes, especially as for the scenes taking place in Barbie Land.

How Classic Musicals Inspired The Barbie Movie (& Which Ones)

Barbie’s most prominent musical aspect is sure to be found in the old classics that served as its inspiration. In particular, soundstage Technicolor musicals act as a major influence in terms of characters’ movements and the general concept behind Barbie Land.

In an interview with Vogue, Gerwig states that especially useful references were provided by The Red Shoes and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, arguing that they displayed exactly the kind of “authentic artificiality” she was going for.

She also mentions soundstage musicals’ painted backdrops as an example of something that “is an illusion, but it’s also really there”, which falls in line with “the tangibility of the artifice” being a key element in the Barbie movie

Is the Barbie movie a musical?

No, the Barbie movie isn’t technically a musical, but there are two songs featured in the movie, both performed by Ken.

The main song that everyone will have already seen is the ’80s power ballad titled ‘I’m Just Ken’. It features as Ken is preparing for the looming Ken war, and even plays as the various Kens are fighting.

It then turns into an elaborately planned dance sequence, and the other Kens join him in singing.

The other song comes a little earlier in the film when Ken offers to sing to (no, at) Barbie. He plays guitar, too, and there’s a comical cut to ‘4 Hours Later’, where they’re then on the beach surrounded by all the other Kens singing along.

Other than this, there’s plenty of music within the movie, but it’s not sung by the characters. Therefore, it’d be a bit of a stretch to call it a musical, officially.
