But if you’ve spent all your time in Los Santos on PS4, or even PS3, it’ll be a significant improvement. That’s the most important thing to know going into this version. It’s the same game deep down, but a vastly better console experience.

First off, the anti-aliasing has been massively improved. The PS4 version of GTA 5 (and even the PC version at times) suffers from a bad case of the jaggies.

It’s not as distractingly shimmery as some games with poor or limited anti-aliasing, but very noticeable in certain places—particularly the fine details of cars.

This new version of GTA 5 does a great job of eliminating the worst offending ragged edges in fidelity mode, which makes the image feel more solid overall.

The expanded and enhanced version of GTA was released on March 15th, 2022 on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X | S. As some quick advice, if you play GTA alone and love small details, definitely buy this new edition.

If you intend to play with friends who do not have a next-gen console, don’t upgrade to this new edition, as in order to transfer your progress rockstar deletes your character from previous console versions.

These modes feature up to 4K resolution, a 60 fps frame rate, improved texture quality, HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading times, immersive 3D audio, platform-specific features, and more.

While playing, the 60 fps was definitely noticeable in the sensation of raw power while driving. The added visual cues such as gusts of wind flying past, help to give an improved sense of speed and power.

During my playthrough I revisited the story mode in this new enhanced edition, and appeared to be much sharper and smoother to play. With improved graphics, Expanded and Enhanced breathed new life into a nearly decade old story.

While GTA 5 is still a 2013 game, seeing past the graphical improvements, the base game still carries the weight of the previous versions.

What becomes increasingly more apparent, is that rockstar attempted to put as little effort towards this remaster as possible, with major issues lining the streets of Los Santos.

A big issue many fans of the series, myself included, have experienced is the continued use of models from as far back as 2008’s GTA IV. So while the upgrade is much appreciated, once you notice how often the same street cars drive by with xbox 360 level graphics, it degrades your experience and reminds you of the games true age.

As I and the rest of the GTA community await a sixth installation in the series, no one demanded yet another minor update to GTA 5.

While, I made the switch to the next gen version of GTA so I could enjoy the new features of the game, I was aware that the next gen edition of GTA online was only $10 on the Xbox Series X | S, while the full package is an extra 10.

Unfortunately these prices are temporary as in just a few short months the price will double for both online-only, and the full package.

Although transferring the account was simple from my end, you cannot return to your character on previous gen versions of the game after migrating profiles.

This can be frustrating if you intend on playing with friends who have yet to purchase a next-gen console. Rockstar added small details such as texture updates for smoke, explosions and glass breaking, but these made me ask were they really needed?

Was this worth the wait?Maybe Rockstar is trying to keep the community tuned in by adding small updates, but most of the community, including me, are disappointed with this update.

Yes, there were small updates like a new start-up menu and a new career builder for players new to GTA, starting off with $4 million to start your enterprise. Furthermore, Rockstar should have added some sort of content update for this game along with the small details they included.

If you are considering purchasing the new GTA, it may be worth it depending on what you’re hoping for. All my friends have the new gen consoles, so we all decided to switch. If you have friends on the old version of GTA 5 and play with them often, it is definitely not worth it to switch and not be able to play with them on that specific account.

Of course, you can have a secondary account to play the old gen, but that is way too complicated, and it is way easier to have one account for GTA. Overall, this update was something simple and could cater to players by being more aesthetically pleasing when playing.

GTA 5 next-gen upgrade has added a bunch of in-game features such as new and faster cars, detailed 4K cutscenes, revamped menus and more along with the visual and speed upgrades.

The Online mode introductory cutscene has also changed to showcase the new update and all the features the player can try out in the game.

When starting the online mode, the players can either migrate their character from their old-gen version or create an all new character with the new career builder mode in GTA Online.

In the career builder mode the players will have choices of bundles they can choose from, these bundles will consist of a collection of houses, cars, businesses,weapons and more, players will have to choose their path and decide their bundle accordingly.

These bundles will cost them money which they can use from the 4 million allowance provided by Rockstar.

The game has also received an upgrade in terms load times and it has made a whopping difference to the game. Through the support of the new SSD, GTA 5 Story and Online modes can be loaded up significantly faster than the previous version, this uninterrupted gameplay will provide the player with complete immersion.

There’s also a nice shockwave ripple effect when a vehicle explodes, which sells the intensity of the blast. In a game where you spend a lot of time blowing stuff up, especially in the final act, this is a nice addition.

Explosions and fire now also cast realistic real-time shadows. Fidelity mode makes use of ray-traced shadows, which when you look at comparison videos/screenshots doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Shadows are softer and behave a little more realistically, but it’s not a significant enough addition to transform the image in any major way. The important thing is that it looks a damn sight better than the last-gen console versions ever did.

When it comes to reflections, the PS5 might have PC beat. Driving along Vinewood at night in a rainstorm, the reflection of neon signs in the puddles seem a lot more accurate and detailed in the next-gen console version.

However, reflections don’t seem to be ray-traced, as it’s not quite a 1:1 mirror, and cars and pedestrians don’t cast reflections. Even so, whatever method is being used, it looks great. The PS4 could only dream of pulling this off.

The draw distance has been improved quite a bit over the PS4 version, although distant scenery has a soft, almost out of focus look to it. I’m not sure if this is a technical or an artistic choice, but on PC, faraway things are notably crisper.

Foliage density and detail is way better than it was on PS4, and basically identical to the PC version on high settings. However, the world LOD is a little laggy. You’ll see things visibly ‘pop’ into detail occasionally.

In Fidelity Mode the game maintains a solid 30fps, but the controls feel slightly sluggish. It took me a while to adjust to this, especially when driving.

But in Performance mode the game trades resolution and a few graphical details to hit a steady 60fps. There’s also a Performance RT Mode that throws ray-tracing into the mix, but lowers the intensity of it to maintain 60fps. I’ve been sticking to Fidelity mode as the image quality is noticeably better.

Loading times are mercifully short on PS5. On PS4, it would take just over two minutes to load from the dashboard into the game; on PS5 it takes just 30 seconds.

I haven’t noticed much difference in swapping between characters, though. It feels basically the same as it did on PS4 to me, and a few comparison videos posted online seem to back this up.

When I first heard about this version I imagined instantaneous character switching, but sadly not.

Driving and shooting feel a little nicer on the DualSense thanks to the game taking advantage of its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback—although the effect is more subtle than I hoped it would be.

The next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 does a much better job of using the adaptive triggers to add weight and resistance to its driving physics. I do like feeling the rumble of different road surfaces under my wheels as I drive, though.

That’s about the size of it. This is not a remake, a remaster, or any kind of dramatic reimagining of GTA 5. It’s the same game you’ve probably played through half a dozen times already—it just runs better and loads faster.

Expect anything more from it and you’ll likely be disappointed. If you’ve played the PC version at max settings in 4K, there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before—except some slightly better real-time reflections.

Even with the extra graphical fidelity, this is still very much GTA 5. None of the new visual or PS5-specific features elevate it beyond that. No matter how Rockstar dresses it up, this is still fundamentally an eight-year-old game—and it’s starting to show.

It’s still one of the best GTAs, and the story is probably worth experiencing one last time, but I am so ready for a new GTA. I’m looking forward to playing the enhanced next-gen version of GTA 6 in 2035.
