Minecraft where to find coal ? Easiest way to find coal in Minecraft

Minecraft where to find coal ? We’ve gone through an entire Minecraft patch cycle since Mojang completely overhauled the world’s ore distribution system. With it, the old Y=11 rule was retired and now you need to have an entirely different strategy depending on which ore you’re looking to find. While it’s easy to remember that old traditions no longer apply, it’s harder to remember exactly which world level is the most likely to have what you’re looking for. In this guide, we explain where you can find coal ore and what the best single height is in Minecraft 1.20 as far as density goes.

What is the Best Level/Height to Find Coal Ore?

Coal used to appear between evenly between Y=0 and Y=125. This made things incredibly easy. Whatever material you were looking for would also help you uncover all the coal you could possibly need. With the newer ore distribution, however, coal is completely nonexistent below Y=0, where you’re likely digging for diamonds.

You can find coal ore between levels zero and 256. There are two different sections of coal. One is a triangle shape, between Y=0 and Y=192, becoming more common as you approach Y=96 and less common as you reach those outer extremities. Because of this Y=96 is the best place to mine for coal in most areas. This isn’t true 100% of the time, however.

There’s a secondary distribution of coal that is only available in extremely high world heights. This one begins at Y=136 and extends all the way up to the world generation limit at Y=256. This shape is a rectangle, meaning the odds are static the entire way through. This second section does overlap with the first in some points meaning Y=136 is likely to have the most coal per chunk, making it the true best level to mine.

An important change, however, is the added effect of reduced air exposure. From a technical standpoint, this means when the world is being generated and a coal ore block is about to be placed in a location where it would be exposed to open air (like in a cave), there’s a chance that the ore will be skipped instead.

In short, this means there is a higher chance of finding coal ore if you’re mining. You will need to balance speed and the number of coal. You can more quickly venture through caves than you can mine tunnels.

It’s worth noting that you can still find copper, iron, emerald, and gold at these levels, but there are now more optimal heights if you’re searching specifically for those materials.

It’s a bit hard to parse, but you see that solid black block in the comparison? That means coal ore was equally likely to spawn at all of those levels. In the new distribution on the left, the ore now becomes more and more prevalent as you Y=96 and again at Y=136 where the triangle and rectangle overlap.

Mine mountains and other high regions

To get loads of coal easily, players must first understand where the ore blocks generate the most in the world. With the 1.18 Caves and Cliffs update part 2, Mojang brought one of the biggest changes to world and ore generation. The bedrock layer shifted 64 blocks lower, the mountains became taller, and the build limit of the world was also increased.

Due to this, ore generation has also changed. Coal, which was previously common throughout the world, is now most common in the lower mountains. They can only be found between Y levels 0 and 256. The sweet spot to find coal is at Y level 96, where they will generate abundantly under solid mountains.

Players will also be able to see loads of coal ore blocks on these mountains. They are even more common inside solid mountains since their generation is reduced if they are exposed to air.

When players start their journey in the game, they can quickly punch any tree to get wood and craft basic tools. Players won’t even require a stone pickaxe to mine coal. With a wooden pickaxe, players can roam around and spot a small mountain that potentially has loads of coal blocks. This is the easiest and fastest way to get coal.

Creating a charcoal farm

Coal and charcoal are identical when it comes to their capabilities to smelt items. Both can smelt up to 8 items. Though there is no way to create a coal farm, players can use wood logs to create a charcoal farm. When wood logs are smelted, they are converted into charcoal.

A farm can be made where charcoal is used for smelting several wood logs and creating more charcoal. This way, players can easily get a good amount of the fuel item without regularly mining.

Understanding the new ore distribution

Coal is majorly found in the form of ore blocks made from stone or deepslate. Since the latest Minecraft 1.18 Caves and Cliffs part 2 update, Mojang has brought huge ore distribution and generation changes. This change was necessary as the world got deeper and went below Y level 0. This changes at which Y level these ores will generate, including coal.

If we take a look at the official ore generation chart released by Mojang, we can notice that coal ore mostly generates around Y level 96 and above Y level 136. This means that if players need to find this item quickly and easily, they need to open the debug screen by hitting the ‘F3’ button and watch their coordinates until they reach Y level 96.

Along with this, players must mostly aim for mountains, as the item generates higher up. For new players who might not know what the ore looks like in Minecraft, it will look like a normal stone block but with black patches. Players can easily find large blobs of the ore from which they can get anywhere from 1 to 37 of them.

Even though players can find the most ores at a certain Y level, this item is extremely common. Hence, if players start the game and roam around for a while near stone blocks, they will be able to spot these ores from which they can mine the item. Players must always make sure that they have a pickaxe to mine in these ores. Mining with any other item or hand will not yield anything.

Aside from smelting, coal can be used to make torches, campfires, and for trading. Players can collect coal with the aforementioned strategy and get going on their projects.
