How to breathe underwater in minecraft? How To Make A Potion Of Water Breathing

How to breathe underwater in minecraft? There are many hostile environments in Minecraft, one of the most unforgiving is being stuck underwater. Luckily there are ways to mitigate the harsh environment of being underwater. There are multiple different ways you can increase the amount of time you can spend underwater in Minecraft. Some are more permanent than others. This guide will show you all the methods you can use to breathe underwater in Minecraft.

Breathing underwater is a useful tool to have in Minecraft. Some of a world’s greatest treasures and deepest caves might be locked underwater beyond the range of normal breathing.

The ocean presents an excellent exploration opportunity for those who can brave the deepest depths. Before you start on the epic world conquest you’ve planned, you’ll want to be able to face the water with no fear.

It’s not as easy as simply jumping in and holding your breath, though. If you want to prevent yourself from taking damage or even dying under the water’s surface, you’ll need to increase the time you can stay underwater. Thankfully, there are a few ways in which enterprising players can better equip themselves to take on the waves.

How to breathe underwater in minecraft

Method No. 1: Potion of Water Breathing

The most obvious way to increase your time spent underwater is to craft and use a Potion of Water Breathing. It’s not the easiest method, but it does grant the longest uninterrupted extension of underwater breathing time. (Note that you’ll need to have access to the Nether to make Potions of Water Breathing.)

First, make or find a Crafting Table out of Wood Planks. From there, combine one Blaze Rod (obtainable in the Nether) and three Cobblestones to create a Brewing Station, another type of crafting block that allows you to brew potions.

Once you’ve placed the Brewing Station, turn another Blaze Rod into Blaze Powder to power its brewing powers. Place a Water Bottle in any of the three potion slots at the bottom of the mechanism, then put a Nether Wart in the top box. The resulting mix should be an Awkward Potion, which should be left alone in the Brewing Stand. Placing a Puffer Fish in the top box and waiting for it to brew will result in the transformation of the Awkward Potion into a Potion of Water Breathing. Players who want to stay underwater for as long as possible can add a Redstone to the completed potion to extend its duration.

Simply drink the potion before entering the water to prevent yourself from taking breathing-related damage while under the water for three minutes (the regular Potion of Water Breathing) or eight minutes (the extended Potion of Water Breathing). This doesn’t stop you from taking damage from mobs or other underwater forces, however.

Method No. 2: Turtle Shell helmet

Equipping a helmet called the Turtle Shell enables the player to breathe underwater for 10 seconds longer than the normal duration. The timer can be refreshed instantly by surfacing or breathing air. To craft a Turtle Shell, you’ll need five Scutes, a mob material that’s only dropped by baby turtles when they grow into adult turtles. Turtles are passive and can be found in beach biomes.

After collecting five Scutes, place them in the usual helmet formation on a Crafting Table to turn them into a Turtle Shell. Equipping the Turtle Shell as a helmet grants the effect instantly.

Method No. 3: Conduits

A conduit is a special type of block that grants huge buffs to any players within its radius and attacks nearby hostile mobs. Conduits can only be placed underwater in Conduit Housing, but they give players underwater night vision, increase their underwater mining speed by 16.7 percent, and, most importantly, grant unlimited underwater breathing.

Crafting a Conduit requires eight Nautilus Shells and one Heart of the Sea, all of which are found underwater. Drowned can potentially spawn with a Nautilus Shell in their hand, which they will drop on death. Nautilus Shells can also be found while fishing or from wandering traders. Heart of the Sea can only be found in buried treasure, which can be located in ocean ruins or shipwrecks with the help of a treasure map.

Once you’ve obtained eight Nautilus Shells and one Heart of the Sea, simply use a crafting table to place the Heart of the Sea in the center area and surround it with the Nautilus Shells. The resulting item will be a Conduit, which can then be placed within Conduit Housing and will grant its unlimited underwater breathing buff.

Water Breathing Potions in Minecraft

There are several variations of Potion of Water Breathing, but each of them allows players to breathe underwater. This will allow Minecraft players to destroy underwater monuments, fight sea critters, and even mine underwater with ease. However, making potions in Minecraft is never easy. The recipe for Potion of Water Breathing has to be followed carefully to get the right result.

Before trying to make some of these Water Breathing potions, players will need a variety of materials and crafting stations at ready. The first thing they will need is a Crafting Table, which players will most likely have no issue getting. It can be crafted with 4 Wood Planks at any time, and Crafting Tables can be used for just about anything in Minecraft.

Players will also need:

  • 2 Blaze Rod
  • 3 Cobblestones
  • 1 Water Bottle
  • 1 Nether Wart
  • 1 Puffer Fish
  • 1 Redstone (optional)

Using one of the Blaze Rods and three Cobblestones from the list above, craft a Brewing Station. Brewing Stations can also be stolen from Minecraft villages or villagers, if players don’t care to make one themselves. Igloos with basements will also have Brewing Stations in them, so players spawning in snowy plains biomes should look for one.

Blaze rods can be acquired from the Nether, by finding a Nether fortress. There’s typically one around 100-200 blocks from the Nether spawn point. Players need to find a Blaze spawner and kill Blazes to acquire Blaze rods. Nether Wart is also found in these Nether fortresses, so keep an eye out for red mushroom-like plants growing on soul sand while exploring a fortress.

Once players have their list of ingredients and Brewing Station all ready to go, they will need to put the potion together. First, use the remaining Blaze Rod to make Blaze Powder. Then head to the Brewing Station, and follow these directions in this order:

Open Brewing Station Menu in Minecraft.

Add the Blaze Powder to the left-hand box. This will activate the Brewing Station and get everything bubbling.

Add a Water Bottle to one of the three boxes at the bottom of the Brewing Station Menu (players can brew multiple potions if they fill each of these three slots with a water bottle).

Add the Nether Wart to the top box, then wait for brewing to complete. Players will now have an Awkward Potion.

Put the Puffer Fish in the top box, then wait for brewing to complete. The Awkward Potion will now be a Potion of Water Breathing.

Optional: Add a Redstone at this stage and get a Potion of Water Breathing that lasts longer.

Now players will be able to swim freely, without worrying about drowning or coming to the surface to breathe. The effect of the Potion is only temporary but will give players some time to discover what lies beneath the sea, like underwater temples, underwater mining, and even building an underwater Minecraft city if players get bored enough.

As mentioned, adding Redstone dust will extend the duration. Without Redstone, the timer for the effect is 3 minutes, and with Redstone dust added, the time extends to a whopping 8 minutes. Given how cheap Redstone dust is and how easy it’s to get, players should always extend the potion duration when they can afford to.

When Should Players Use Water Breathing Potions?

Water Breathing potions might seem very niche to some players, but ever since the 1.13 aquatic update, they’ve become important to the game. So much loot is located underwater in ruins and shipwrecks, including treasure maps that can lead to buried treasure of diamonds and hearts of the sea, which is used to make a conduit.

Water Breathing potions are also required for those who want to defeat the Elder Guardians inside an Ocean Monument. These underwater dungeons are extremely tough without proper Water Breathing status effects, on top of having quite difficult enemies as well. Players wanting to get their hands on Prismarine, sponge blocks, and the gold treasure in these monuments will have to invest in Water Breathing potions.
